Description:
Remi Barreau’s Bruckner recordings, known for their unconventional interpretations, now feature the Kostovet edition of Symphony No. 4! Bruckner’s symphonies exist in various versions. Among them, Symphony No. 4 presents a particularly difficult choice of version due to its subtle differences. For a long time, it was believed that the third version had been arbitrarily altered by Bruckner’s student, Reeve; however, since the Kostvet edition used here was published by the International Bruckner Society in 2004, it has been reevaluated, and the theory that this is the version Bruckner himself approved is gaining traction. Since Barrow had been performing the Second Draft (1878/80) for about 20 years, he reportedly felt that when he performed the Third Draft for the first time in 2011, it was as if “a familiar landscape had been overgrown with vegetation, making it feel somehow alien.” However, as Barrow explains in his commentary, it is precisely this Third Draft that stands as a testament to Bruckner’s maturity; every revision is carefully crafted, and the refined work is richer in nuance and even more accessible to the listener. In particular, the closing section of the scherzo, the coda of the final movement, and the soft cymbal strokes used just before the climax are incredibly effective. Barrow’s composed and unhurried performance sincerely conveys Bruckner’s intentions, and the audience responds with warm applause. Barrow himself oversaw the sound production for this release, and the high-fidelity recording—the result of the engineering team’s meticulous attention to detail—faithfully reproduces the rich reverberation in its entirety.
