Brahms Performed by the Master Knyazev: Dynamic and Full of Lyrical Spirit Originally written for the clarinet and later rearranged as viola sonatas, these two works are performed here by Knyazev with such conviction that one might be forgiven for thinking they were actually written for the cello. The expression is more dynamic and profound, and the lyrical spirit that permeates every corner of the music is truly Knyazev’s forte. The B-side features Brahms’s songs for bass and piano—which were among his very last works (followed only by a collection of chorales for organ)—performed here on cello and piano. His collaborator is the Lithuanian pianist Vinskas, who has received rave reviews at major concert halls worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, and who also performed a duo with Evgeni Bojanov on *Argerich with Friends 2018* (AVA10572). They deliver a magnificent performance that sheds new light on these works, which can be described as the “swan song” of Brahms’s very final years.
