Friedrich Kuhlau was an early Romantic composer from Germany. He lost the sight in one eye in an accident when he was a child, but after moving to Denmark, he achieved great success as a pianist and composer. He is also known for his advocacy of Beethoven in Denmark. He composed numerous piano and flute pieces, among them a series of sonatinas that have been of great use to piano students for moderate finger training and the development of their musicality. In this album, Marie-Louise Bodendorf presents some of Kuhlau's most charming and distinctive music, beginning with the world premiere recording of "Three Rondos," followed by six sonatinas composed in 1823. All are small in scale but beautiful works with graceful melodies. The "Fantasy" placed at the end is a late work, dedicated to his pupil, Mrs. Betty Magnusson, whom he met through the German pianist Carl Schwarz, who was living in Gothenburg, Sweden. It is a brilliant fantasy with well-known Swedish songs. Marie-Louise Bodendorff, who plays the piece, is a pianist who began playing the piano at the age of five and studied at the Hanover College of Music from 2002 to 2007.He has a secure technique and rich musicality.
