Wolfgang Rihm is one of the leading composers of contemporary music. He studied composition and music theory in Karlsruhe, Germany, and wrote his first piece in 1963. Since then, he has been very active as a composer and teacher, and his more than 400 works are all highly acclaimed internationally. Rihm has a deep knowledge of art, literature, and philosophy, which have been a source of inspiration for his compositions, as well as many works inspired by the great works of Bach, Schumann, Brahms, and other composers in music history. In celebration of Rihm's 70th birthday (March 13, 2022), BR-KLASSIK's musica viva series has released two albums. This Vol. 40 includes the large-scale "Hunting and Forms," which had its world premiere in Basel in November 2001 by the Ensemble Moderne. (Vol. 39...900639 recorded live in 2020.) This "Jagden und Formen Hunting and Formen" was originally written between 1995 and 2001, but Rihm revised the entire work between 2007 and 2008. Here, the "work-in-progress" that had been growing over the years was completed.The piece is led by a playful melody of two violins, which quickly escalates in tone and turns into breathtaking and exciting music without a break in the entire piece.
