A wonderful collection of music by seven African composers. Released in February, "African-American History Month" in the United States, this is also pianist Rebecca Omordia's debut album. The album includes Bankole's "Egun Variations," which skillfully blends the European "G Major" scale with the Nigerian musical language; Earle's "Princess Rainbow," which recounts his memories of his childhood in Africa; and Nketiah's "African Piano," which is influenced by the rhythmic accents of African percussion music. Nketiah's "African Pianism," Ewuba's "Three Yoruba Mute Songs," which uses indigenous songs to great effect, and Onobwelos Oke's "Five Kaleidoscopes," whose work has been used in a De Niro movie, are among the interesting pieces. Songs with percussion are also worth hearing. Rebecca Omordia, hailed as a "pioneer of African classical music," is a pianist of Romanian and Nigerian descent. She is the artistic director of the African Music Concert Series in London. Naxos Japan
