After establishing himself as a reliable continuo player with ensembles such as the Minkowski and Savall ensembles, he has in recent years built a strong reputation performing concertos with leading early music ensembles like Zephyr and Il Pomodoro, steadily increasing his presence on the scene. As a solo recording artist, he is a virtuoso who meticulously interprets a wide-ranging repertoire—from 17th-century Louis Couperin to Haydn’s sonatas and other works from the golden age of harpsichord art—in keeping with the stylistic sensibilities of each period. Now, drawing on his rich experience and brilliant musicality, he has released an album on ARCANA that takes on Handel’s world of keyboard music head-on. It is said that he possessed a level of skill comparable to that of his contemporary D. Scarlatti, known for his 555 keyboard sonatas, and and in his later years, “Handel the virtuoso”—who even served as the soloist in organ concertos during intermissions of oratorio performances—mastered the harpsichord and composed music that captured the spirit of his time. This album allows listeners to savor, through performances that are both natural and meticulously crafted down to the finest detail, just how skillfully he utilized the instrument. This is not only a groundbreaking new complete recording of the famous “Eight Suites” from 1720—which includes movements that have long been beloved in their own right, such as the variations known by the nickname “The Cheerful Blacksmith”—but also features opera overtures for which Handel’s autograph keyboard scores survive, as well as arrangements by his contemporary Bable—all of which demonstrate an exquisite structure highlighting the continuity with music from other genres. Ken Yoshida, an engineer active with ALPHA, masterfully captures the natural beauty of the sound produced by 18th-century German-model instruments.
