A duel ensues with the Commendatore, and Don Giovanni kills him before fleeing. Donna Anna pleads with her fiancé, Don Ottavio, to avenge her father’s death. Meanwhile, Giovanni—accompanied by his servant Leporello—flees from his former lover, Donna Elvira, who is demanding they reconcile, and goes on to seduce Zerlina, a village girl and the bride at the wedding feast… A lecherous nobleman who, after indulging in every possible pleasure, falls into hell… Based on a legend dating back to the Middle Ages, this opera, *Don Giovanni*, was born. This production is a revival of Kasper Holten’s acclaimed staging, which premiered in 2014 to great acclaim. Highlights include the extensive use of bold projection mapping, the skillful use of space through the revolving stage, and the nuanced characterizations of the cast. Erwin Schrott takes on the role of Don Giovanni. His compelling performance—depicting a man driven to the depths of despair after indulging his desires to the fullest—and his exquisite singing are a must-hear. The three women in Don Giovanni’s life are portrayed by Marin Byström as Donna Anna, Milt Papatanas as Donna Elvira, and Louise Alder as Zerlina—all singers brimming with strong individuality and presence—who engage in a lively exchange of acting and singing with Schrott. Conducted by Hartmut Henchen—who possesses a deep understanding of Classical-era works, particularly those by Mozart, and is well-versed in the unique highlights of opera—this production meticulously and vividly portrays the intricate, rapidly shifting psychological dynamics between the men and women.
