From Lully, a pioneer of musical dance drama, to Mozart’s “French-style” works… Geber’s Masterpiece in *The King Dances* French stage music of the 17th and 18th centuries was not only one of the key sources of ballet music but also contributed significantly to the development of orchestral music. Based on the style established by Lully, the King’s Master of Music at the court of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (1638–1715), operas that placed great emphasis on dance scenes enjoyed immense popularity in French theaters throughout the 18th century. These operas influenced other countries as models that stood on equal footing with the Italian art of singing; they also served as a venue for diverse musical experiments using orchestras, thereby playing a supporting role in the advancement of Classical music. An album chronicling the rise of French dance music in chronological order has been produced by a label based at Versailles, the residence of Louis XIV. What’s more, the conductor is Reinhard Goebel, who was responsible for the music in the film *The King Dances* (2000/2001), which featured Lully and the Sun King as its protagonists! Gebel, who has accumulated a wealth of experience as a conductor (working with both period and modern instruments) even after the dissolution of his own ensemble, Musica Antica Köln, brings a distinctive sound all his own. Together with his liner notes (which include a Japanese translation for the domestic edition), this recording is poised to become an essential reference. From Campra and Rameau, who took up the mantle after Lully and enlivened the French music scene, as well as the grace of Lully’s successors—Campra, Rameau, and Le Ber—and the elegance and power of Gluck and Mozart, born from the inspiration of French opera, are all vividly brought to life for the present day by Gebel and the period instrument players gathered at Versailles.
