Description:
In the early 1800s, polyphonic vocal works were popular in bourgeois musical culture. Most of these were quartets and duets sung in salons by a single singer in each part, but there were already amateur choirs in Vienna at that time, and regular concerts were being held. Schubert's vocal works were often performed by these choirs, attracting the attention of the general public. The first time Schubert's works were performed at the Musikverein in Vienna was on January 25, 1821, when a male and female choir accompanied by a piano performed "Gondola Riders" and "Serenade. The "Miriam's Victory Song," placed last, is a choral piece with religious content. It tells the story of Miriam, the sister of Moses, who inspires the Israelites to flee Egypt while clanging cymbals, and the mixed chorus, led by a soprano soloist, sang the magnificent story.
