Description:

The year 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of Bruckner’s birth. To commemorate this, the third installment of the “#bruckner2024” project—an initiative to record all versions of Bruckner’s symphonies—is now available. This installment features the Symphony in D minor, commonly known as “No. 0.” Although this work was completed around 1869—after Symphony No. 1—Bruckner did not assign it a number when he organized his works in 1895, instead marking it “Die Nullte” (“The Null”). However, Bruckner did not dispose of the score but kept it. Bruckner scholar Hawkshaw writes in the liner notes, “Perhaps Bruckner left the judgment of this work’s value to posterity.” In fact, although this piece is an early work, it possesses a structure characteristic of Bruckner and features many of the hallmarks of his symphonies, such as forceful brass passages, striking woodwind solos, chorale-like melodies, and folk-dance-style rhythms. Once again, Poschner maintains a generally brisk tempo while employing a wide range of dynamics and tempo changes to create a performance with clear contrast and definition. There are plenty of highlights to enjoy: the first movement, where various melodies intertwine; the second movement, which possesses the beauty of an Andante rather than an Adagio; the third movement, where the contrast between the powerful, weighty Scherzo and the fantastical Trio—played at a drastically slower tempo—leaves a lasting impression; and the dramatic and majestic final movement. Although the score used is the Novak edition, it is evident that the performance was preceded by a meticulous re-examination of the text. The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note by Yutaro Ishihara (musicologist and member of the International Bruckner Society). Naxos Japan
