The masterpiece “Miserere” and more: the essence of Lully’s church music from his early to late periods In 17th-century France, during the reign of Louis XIV—known as the “Great Century”—Jean-Baptiste Lully played a pivotal role in shaping the ideal form of French court music, backed by the king’s unwavering trust. However, while his operas have seen a remarkable resurgence in recent years, his numerous *grand motets*—religious works featuring an unparalleled and beautiful interplay between instrumental and vocal parts—remain surprisingly underrepresented in recordings, despite their significance as a major source of inspiration for subsequent generations of composers. In this album, the talented Stéphane Fuget—who is passionate about reviving Lully’s music—has carefully selected three pieces from the composer’s early, middle, and late periods. These authentic new recordings by an all-French early-music ensemble are all truly invaluable. Featuring a string ensemble of 24 musicians—including large, historically reconstructed violas and basses de violon—as well as the elegant, ancient low-pitched wind instrument, the serpent, as well as two theorboes and two keyboard instruments, the ensemble—which uncompromisingly pursues the 17th-century French style—creates a sound that is authentic and overwhelming from the very opening of the “Miserere.” The dignified singing is beautiful in every detail, and the vocal ensemble—which intersperses solos throughout—includes Gwendoline Blondel, who also appeared as Cupid in *Semele* (RIC437) conducted by Alarcón; the highly talented Benoît Arnoux; and the extraordinary Marc Moyon, who masters repertoire ranging from the Middle Ages to the present—along with many other talented artists spanning both older and younger generations. Additionally, Japanese singers such as Ayako Yukawa—who performed in Rameau’s *Anacreon* (Kita Topia) conducted by Ryo Terakobe in December 2021—and Kumi Sakamoto, who maintains a busy schedule in France and Belgium, also participate. The engineering by master sound engineer Frédéric Brillant is also superb, capturing the rich interpretation that resonates through the Chapel of Versailles—completed during the later years of Louis XIV—along with the natural ambiance of the venue.
