Description:

The Complete Haydn Recordings: Uncovering the Truth Behind the “Paris Symphonies,” a Key Work Marking the Transition to His Later Period! As part of Antonini’s project to record all of Haydn’s symphonies in time for the 300th anniversary of the composer’s birth in 2032, this is the 11th release. Moving beyond the previous focus on mid-career works, this program centers on two major works composed after Haydn turned 50. The theme is “The Parisian Public’s Favorites.” In Paris at that time, as orchestral concerts were beginning to gain attention as a new form of entertainment, symphonies composed in the German-speaking world were gaining popularity—and Haydn was one of the composers who contributed significantly to that boom. His six symphonies—Nos. 82 through 87—were composed for the *Concert de la Loge*—one of the concert series held in the French capital— Olympique, and are therefore known as the “Paris Symphonies.” For this program, two works have been selected from this set: Symphony No. 82, known for its large-scale orchestration and nicknamed “The Bear,” and Symphony No. 87, which makes ingenious use of a slightly smaller ensemble. The other two works are both early compositions and important pieces that served as the “prehistory” leading up to their creation. Including this background, the liner notes—written by conductor Antonini and musicologist Moritz Bauer based on their practical experience and the latest research—are once again fascinating reading. For this recording, the Basel Chamber Orchestra has incorporated players who regularly perform with *Il Giardino Armonico*—including the concertmaster and principal wind players—and their dynamic interpretation, which fully conveys the significance of using period instruments, is once again in top form. From the crispness of Symphony No. 2—performed with an ensemble reduced to the size of the early Esterházy court orchestra—to the opulent sound of “The Bear,” where trumpets and timpani make their presence fully felt, please enjoy to the fullest the charm of Haydn’s world, which holds a wealth of versatile creativity.
