BSOrec, the Bavarian State Opera’s in-house label, presents its second video release A young girl named Gerda and a young boy named Kai are listening intently as their grandmother tells the story of “The Snow Queen.” That night, after going to bed but unable to sleep, Kai is terrified when the Snow Queen appears at his window. Captivated by the world of ice, Kai’s heart drifts away from Gerda, and one day, he is carried off by the Snow Queen. Gerda sets out alone on a perilous journey to rescue Kai, but… *The Snow Queen* is the first opera by Hans Abrahamsen, a contemporary composer from Denmark. Abrahamsen has stated that his long-standing theme—the musical expression of “snow”—served as the inspiration for composing this opera. Based on Andersen’s fairy tale *The Snow Queen*, the libretto was written and the music composed between 2014 and 2018, and the opera received its world premiere (in Danish) in Copenhagen in October 2019. At the same time, British writer Amanda Holden was commissioned to write an English-language libretto in order to cast Barbara Hannigan in the opera. This English-language version was staged at the Bavarian State Opera in December—two months after the Copenhagen premiere—where Hannigan sang the title role of Gerda with a masterful balance of intellect and emotion, earning rave reviews. Also worth hearing are the performances by the talented cast, including rising star soprano Rachel Wilson as Kai, alongside veteran singers Peter Rose and Katarina Dalayman. Furthermore, Abrahamsen’s exquisitely crafted music, performed by the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of Cornelius Meister, harmonizes beautifully with the fantastical stage scenes directed by Kregenburg.
