Rigoletto, the court jester to the dissolute Duke of Mantua, resents his own ugly appearance, hates society, and is despised by the Duke’s courtiers for his sharp tongue. Yet even Rigoletto had a beloved only daughter, Gilda, whom he had raised with great care. One day, of all things, Gilda is abducted by the Duke of Mantua and raped. Upon learning of this, Rigoletto swears revenge and hires the assassin Sparafucile to kill the Duke, but… For the 2020–21 season, the May Festival in Florence presented a new production of *Rigoletto*. Although the scheduled performances were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the production went ahead as a performance without an audience on February 23, 2021. It was streamed live online and recorded. Directed by Rivermore, this new production rapidly shifts the setting from act to act—between the Mantua court, a semi-basement laundry, a seedy nightclub, and a subway platform—all while maintaining a seamless harmony between Verdi’s music and the libretto, offering a fresh take with meticulous attention to detail, right down to the characters’ mannerisms. The role of the Duke of Mantua was played by Javier Camarena, a Mexican singer widely acclaimed as a “phenomenal tenor” who made his Italian debut with this performance; Rigoletto was portrayed by Luca Sarsi, a leading Verdi baritone; and in the role of Gilda, Enkheda Kamani, an up-and-coming soprano from Albania who made a striking debut in this role at La Scala in 2019—a truly stellar lineup. In addition to this stellar cast of soloists, the Florence May Festival Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by the master of Italian opera Riccardo Frizza, will treat the audience to an abundance of beautiful melodies set against the backdrop of Verdi’s gripping drama.
