Description:
Aeneas, a prince of Troy, lost his fellow citizens and family members in the Trojan War, which plunged the Greek states and the cities of Asia Minor into turmoil. The son of Venus and Anchises, and a brave warrior, he set out from Asia Minor to build a new Troy (later to become the great city of Rome) on the Mediterranean coast, but was struck by a violent storm off the coast of Africa. He was rescued by Dido, the queen of Carthage, who had recently lost her husband. Aeneas, who was warmly welcomed, fell in love with Dido, and the two decided to marry, but… Aeneas, Prince of Troy, is the protagonist of Virgil’s epic poem *The Aeneid*, written in the 1st century BCE. Metastasio adapted the episode featuring Dido, the tragic queen of Carthage, from this epic adventure into the play *Dido Abandoned*. It is well known that in the 18th century, over 70 operas were created based on this play. This performance of Purcell’s *Dido and Aeneas* is based on a libretto by Nahum Tate, which draws from Virgil’s *Aeneid*. Although the score was lost after the composer’s death, most of it has been reconstructed from surviving sources. In Deborah Warner’s production of this work, the prologue—which could not be fully reconstructed—is reimagined through three poems, including T.S. Eliot’s *The Waste Land* (read by actress Fiona Shaw). This serves as a magnificent introduction to the tragic opera; furthermore, taking its cue from the recorded performance of this opera at Chelsea Girls’ Boarding School, the story unfolds against the setting of a classroom filled with schoolgirls. In addition to the expressive singing of the two title roles, Ernman and Moltmann, Les Arts Florissants, led by William Christie, breathes new life into this masterpiece by Purcell, thanks to a cast of singers with strong stage presence, including Summers as the Witch and Moyon as the Spirit.
