Description:

Renowned Singer Pio’s Long-Awaited New Selection of Handel Masterpieces Features Strong Female Protagonists Sandrine Pio is a leading soprano who has not only garnered attention as a celebrated Baroque opera singer at opera houses across Europe—including her native France—but has also built a unique track record in modern works, particularly French art songs. Her beautiful voice, which combines a crystalline clarity well-suited to the early music repertoire with a distinctive power, has captivated audiences in numerous performances of Handel’s works conducted by top-tier conductors. However, it has been over 10 years since she released an album of Handel works under her own name—her last two were on the NAIVE label! Titled “Enchanting Women,” this new album features a collection of famous arias centered on distinctive female roles—such as those who wield sorcery—that frequently appear in Handel’s works. The lineup includes the ill-fated Lucrezia, as well as Cleopatra from *Julius Caesar* (Julius Caesar),” as Pio herself explains: “I chose powerful women who would not even hesitate to kill to achieve their goals—a complete departure from my earlier image, which was built on lighter roles.” Les Paradans, led by Jérôme Correas—who began his career as a early music singer but has also demonstrated keen talent as a Baroque opera conductor—participates with a string section of 4/3/3/3/1, occasionally joined by oboes and trumpets. The exquisite depth of their sound not only masterfully supports the vocal solos but also, in the instrumental tracks, produces the vividly nuanced sound characteristic of French-speaking ensembles. Featuring hit numbers such as “I Weep for My Fate” and “Let Me Weep,” this new masterpiece anthology presents Piao and the early music ensemble engaging directly with Handel, weaving together a rich interpretation that grows in depth the more you listen. The Japanese edition includes liner notes and translated lyrics. Japanese Translation of Liner Notes: Tadashi Mikajiri Japanese Translation of Lyrics: Reiko Suwa Naxos Japan
