The theme of the final volume of “FourElements,” a project Yu Kosuge has been working on for four years, is “Earth.” Yu Kosuge, whose performances—centered on Beethoven and Chopin—are characterized by a powerful touch and a unique sensibility, presents this album, a live recording of the “Earth” program that concludes the “FourElements” concert series she has been developing since 2017. “Of the four elements—water, fire, wind, and earth—‘earth’ is the one closest to humanity. I wanted to create a program that traces the essence of humanity itself while narrating human history,” says Kosuge. Her vision is fully reflected in this selection, which, unlike her previous albums featuring short pieces, consists entirely of substantial works, each one a centerpiece in its own right. The program features Schubert’s “The Wanderer,” themed around “life and death,” “homeland,” and “wandering”—all evoked by the earth; Janáček’s sonata “October 1, 1905: In the Street”; Chopin’s “Piano Sonata No. 3,” and Dai Fujikura’s “Akiko’s Diary”—said to be based on the diary of a young girl who lost her life in the Hiroshima atomic bombing. Each piece not only tells a story but also embodies the composer’s profound emotions; Kosuge carefully draws these out, weaving the music together with her uniquely powerful tone and delicate emotional expression.
