“Démonstration” was founded in 1977 by Claude Bessy, who made a name for himself as an étoile with the Paris Opera Ballet and served as director of the Paris Opera Ballet School from 1972 to 2004. Held once a year at the Paris Opera (Palais Garnier), this popular event features students of the Paris Opera Ballet School presenting to the public the French ballet system and techniques that have been passed down from teacher to student. Although the 2020 “Démonstration” was not held as a public event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was conducted as part of the students’ training for the event and was filmed. The school’s students, divided into classes ranging from the 6th Division (beginner class) to the 1st Division (advanced class), perform various pas (steps) and choreographed pieces under the guidance of their teachers. The other documentary, “School of Dreams,” consists of interviews with the teachers and students of the Paris Opera Ballet School who appear in “Demonstration,” as well as scenes from their lessons, in which they discuss their passion for dance, their struggles, and their hopes for the future.
