To escape a sudden storm, Don Palmenione is having dinner at an inn with his servant Martino. Count Alberto arrives with his valet. After telling Don Parmenione that he is going to Naples to get married, the count departs in a great hurry as soon as the rain stops, but in his haste, he picks up the wrong suitcase. When Parmenione opens the bag left behind by Count Alberto, he finds a beautiful portrait of the count’s fiancée. Parmenione decides to impersonate Count Alberto and marry her… So, what kind of commotion will ensue? Here is footage from a performance of the opera *The Accidental Thief* at the Rossini Festival in Wirthwald in July 2017. The festival’s artistic director, Jochen Schönleber, has transposed the story to the present day and, by reinterpreting the accidental mix-up of suitcases as a deliberate swap, has crafted a comedy with even greater satirical edge. First performed in Venice in 1812 as the 20-year-old Rossini’s eighth opera, this work is a masterpiece distinguished by its fresh emotional depth and comedic flair. The six characters perform and sing with expressive freedom and ease, and the superb singing of Lorenzo Regazzo (in the role of Palmenione)—who is well-known to Japanese audiences from his several visits to Japan—shines in particular. The lighthearted and elegant music woven by the Virtuosi Brunensis, led by Antonino Foliani—who has served as Virtuosi Brunensis’s music director since 2012—is also a highlight. Naxos Japan
