This is a collection of Haydn's piano sonatas by British pianist Leon McCauley, who won the first prize at the Beethoven International Piano Competition in Vienna in 1993 and the second prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition the same year. The first three collections to date have all been highly acclaimed by British music magazines. The fourth collection features six sonatas composed between 1766 and 1780, focusing on "No. 48 in C major" and "No. 49 in C-sharp minor," which are often handled by piano students. The first is a plainly written work with pedagogical elements, but it also has a delightful divertimento style. Macquarie's performance conveys the full musical charm of Haydn's works. Naxos Japan
