Description:
This is a set of albums by three of the most famous violinists in the history of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition, Violin Division. The recording is from 1967, when Gidon Kremer, who has been remarkably active to date, first attracted attention on the international stage at the age of just 20 and won third prize with Elgar's concerto, an unusual choice for the finals of a major competition. Edith Volkert, who won fifth prize in the 1971 finals with a Shostakovich concerto she played in two rehearsals in front of the jury, which included the premiere by Oistrakh, also recorded Bartók with Gielen at the prize winners' concert. Folkert died in 1992 after a battle with illness, and this album celebrates the achievements of the ill-fated artist from Ghent, Belgium. In 1980, when there was no participation from the Soviet Union due to the height of the Cold War, the competition produced three winners from Japan, including the winner Yuzuko Horigome, Takashi Shimizu in third place, and Ruriko Tsukahara in fourth place, which attracted much attention.Yuzuko Horime, who overwhelmed the audience with her unaccompanied Ysaÿe performance in the semi-finals, also gave a performance of the Sibelius concerto in the finals that was hailed as the finest performance of the piece in the competition's history.
