Description:
In October 2020, during the Beethoven Year (250th anniversary of his birth), the SWR Schwetzingen Festival presented a four-night series of concerts by the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music highlighting Beethoven and his contemporary composers. This disc contains the concerts of Nights 3 and 4. The centerpieces of the third evening were Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, "Destiny," and Mehl's Symphony No. 1. The two pieces were composed at about the same time and share some similarities musically. Meilleur's work is a lively music that makes full use of counterpoint, which was praised by Schumann when he heard it later in life. The fourth evening featured Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, "The Countryside," Knecht's "Musical Depiction of Nature, or the Great Symphony," written some 20 years earlier, and Holzbauer's symphony entitled "Storm at Sea. Both of these symphonies share the same work as a sonic depiction of nature, and Knecht's work in particular is known for its proximity to Beethoven's. This video is full of attractions other than the music, such as the players of the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music playing period instruments and their instrumental arrangements. Naxos Japan
