Satoko is a singer and gusli player living in Novgorod, a city in medieval Russia. After singing about his ambitions at a banquet held by the city’s guild of wealthy merchants, Satoko is branded a con artist who has insulted the guild and is banished. As Satoko wanders along the lakeshore singing, Volkhova, the daughter of the Sea King, appears, captivated by his song. She tells him that she is destined to marry a human, and if he accepts this, she will reveal a secret—a magical golden fish—that will bring him immense wealth. Having learned this secret, Satoko returns to the city and sets out onto the open sea in search of wealth, but… *Satoko* is based on a script adapted from the *Legend of Satoko*, an oral epic (bylina), and is considered one of Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterpieces, featuring a rich orchestration that draws on Russian folk songs and traditional music. Dmitry Chernyakov, a prodigious talent in high demand on the global opera scene, directs this production at the Bolshoi Theater in his hometown of Moscow. He breathes new life into this dreamlike work, which shifts between the present and the past, fantasy and reality. Nazimidin Mavlyanov, who brilliantly sings the title role, is a young tenor from Uzbekistan who performs primarily at the Bolshoi Theatre; The production also features the popular Russian soprano Aida Galifullina as Volkhova, the Sea King’s daughter, alongside a stellar vocal ensemble including established singers such as Ekaterina Semenchuk, Yuri Minenko, and Mikhail Petrenko.
