Description:
Tese, son of Neptune, the god of the sea, captures Pallas' youngest daughter, Alyce, when he destroys her political enemies, the Pallas family, and makes her swear to be pure so that her descendants will not threaten his position in the future. Meanwhile, Tzé's second wife, Phèdre, has an illicit love affair with Ippolito, the son of Tzé's previous wife. One day, while Tzée is in the underworld to save her friend, Phèdre confesses her love to Ippolito. Ippolito rejects him vehemently, and as the two struggle, Tzé returns, mistakenly believing that his son was about to rape his wife. Tézet banishes Ippolito and petitions his father Neptune to punish Ippolito severely... Lyric tragedy, a genre of French opera established by Lully, who was music director at the court of Louis XIV, the Sun King, with scriptwriter Philippe Quinault. Rameau, who had made a name for himself as a composer of instrumental works and a theorist of harmony, completed his first opera, "Ippolito et Aricie," at the age of 50, in the form of Lully's "lyric tragedy. The opera, now considered one of Rameau's masterpieces, was controversial at the time of its premiere due to its innovative compositional techniques, but Jeanne Kandel's production, staged at the Opéra Comique in Paris in November 2020, was a masterpiece of modernity, with the central characters, including Tézet, Ippolito, Phèdre, and Alyce, dressed in aristocratic costumes, while the gods and the crowd sang and danced in a modern, sometimes kitschy style, to curious effect. The central characters, such as Tézet, Ippolito, Phèdre, and Alyce, are dressed in aristocratic costumes, while the gods and the crowd sing and dance in a modern, sometimes kitschy style, to magical effect. The ensemble Pygmalion, led by internationally acclaimed haute-contre singer Reinaut van Mechelen (Ippolito) and other talented singers and spirited old music conductor Raphael Pichon, tackles Rameau's music head-on.
