Description:
Gabriel Pierné, a composer of the French Impressionist era, studied composition with Jules Massenet and organ with César Franck at the Paris Conservatory. At the age of 19, he won the Prix de Rome for his cantata *Édith*. From then on, while active as conductor of the Colonne Orchestra and organist at the Church of Sainte-Chloé, he composed works in many genres, including opera. "Ramuncho," included on this album, is incidental music for a play that premiered in 1908. It bears the subtitle “Based on Basque Folk Songs,” and the suite includes pieces with strong folk elements, such as “Fandango” and “Basque Rhapsody.” The ballet music “Cidalis and the Shepherd God” is one of Pierné’s most representative works. It premiered at the Paris Opera in 1923 and was later rearranged as a concert suite. Set in the 18th century, the story blends ancient Greek modes with elements of Baroque parody, and its refined music stands out as a masterpiece even among neoclassical ballet works. [Darrell Ann] Born in Singapore in 1979. After graduating with highest honors from the conducting program at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, she completed a master’s degree in conducting at Yale University. He honed his skills under Jorma Panula, who has mentored numerous Finnish conductors, and studied under Lorin Maazel, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Vladimir Jurowski, and Sir Colin Davis. In 2007, he won first prize at the 50th Besançon International Conducting Competition. The following year, in 2008, he took top honors at the 8th Arturo Toscanini International Conducting Competition. That same year, he was appointed Young Associate Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and from the 2012 season onward, he served as Music Director of the Orchestre de Bretagne in France for four years. He has appeared as a guest conductor with numerous renowned orchestras, primarily in France—including the France Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lyon National Orchestra, the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Concerts Lamoureux—and regularly conducts at the Mariinsky Theatre. *The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note by Hiro Aiba.
