Alois J. Hofstrasserer (1941-) is an Austrian conductor. After studying conducting and choral conducting with Hans Gillesberger and Hans Swarovski at the University of Music and Arts Vienna, she was trained by Serge Celibidacke, and from 1966 to 1971 was Kapellmeister at Graz Cathedral. In 1971, he founded and conducted the Graz Concert Choir, founded the Erl International Orchestra Week (Tyrol) (now the Tyrol Festival Erl), and held teaching positions at various educational institutions. He has also been the conductor of the Pannonian Philharmonic Orchestra for many years, and was elected an honorary citizen of the Franz Schmidt community in Vienna for his efforts to promote Franz Schmidt's "The Book of Seven Seals," including its premiere in Hungary in 2003. Produced by the Interpanon Concert Society, of which Hofstrasserer is artistic director and president, this box set features live recordings of the Graz Concert Choir spanning five decades.The recordings range from symphonic works, concerto movements, oratorios, masses, and opera excerpts, ranging from Baroque to Viennese Classical, Romantic, and Modern music. The sound sources used are mainly live recordings from the historic Stefaniensaal hall in Graz, the Sommerphilharmonie International Music Festival in Leoben, the Pentecostal Concert in Weiz, and charity concerts in Feldbach and Vorau (Styria). Also included are recordings of Haydn's "The Creation" and "The Pentecostal Concert". Also included are complete recordings of Haydn's "The Creation," Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and Bruckner's Seventh Symphony. Although deeply rooted in Austrian culture, Hofstrasse is not widely known in Japan. This release is an excellent introduction to the art of conducting. Naxos Japan
