“During the rehearsal process, we were repeatedly astonished to discover just how much explosive power, bright color, and immense boldness there is in Bruckner’s symphonies. —To appreciate this, we had to question the score and distinguish between false traditions and the true tradition.” —Markus Poschner Because Bruckner would sometimes revise his symphonies even after they were initially completed—for various reasons—there are often multiple drafts and editions of the same work, and listening to and appreciating these differences is a great joy for avid Bruckner fans. The year 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of Bruckner’s birth, and to commemorate this, the second installment of the “#bruckner2024” project—an initiative to record every version of all of Bruckner’s symphonies—has already been released. It features his Symphony No. 8 (1890 version), often considered his masterpiece. Poshner adopts a brisk tempo, bringing the entire work to a running time of approximately 77 minutes. While the performance is tight and focused overall, the orchestra’s rich, full-bodied sound in the first and third movements ensures it never feels lightweight. Other hallmarks of this performance include a wide range of dynamics and tempo variations, as well as an emphasis on passages resembling folk songs and ethnic dances that appear throughout the work. One can also discern unique artistic touches, such as the way the wind instruments are brought to the fore. Although the score used is the well-known Novak edition, it is evident that the performance was based on a meticulous re-examination of the text.
