A collection of works by Austrian composer Thomas Larcher. "Symphony No. 2," composed between 2015 and 2016, was commissioned to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Austrian National Bank and was premiered in 2016 by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Semyon Bychkov. Titled “Memorial” in memory of the many refugees who lost their lives while crossing the Mediterranean Sea to escape the Syrian conflict, this work was originally conceived as a concerto for orchestra and has been crafted into a magnificent piece in which intense emotional expression bursts forth from within a contemporary framework. “Lost Nights” is a cycle of art songs based on texts by the Austrian poet Ingeborg Bachmann. Larcher’s music, which meticulously captures the poems’ somber atmosphere, is meditative and dreamlike, inviting the listener into a surreal world.
