A historical piano and a famous singer from the 19th century reveal the true value of one of the greatest song composers of the late German Romantic period! In the 19th century, before the invention of recording technology, when scores that could be played on the piano in the drawing room were the only means of communicating music to the private sphere, song composers were much more significant than in the 21st century. Eduard Lassen, the protagonist of this disc, was an important composer who enjoyed great popularity in the world of German song during his lifetime, although he was rapidly forgotten in this trend. A Danish-born Belgian of the same generation as Brahms, he was strongly influenced at a young age by Franz Liszt, although his native language was French, and he cultivated his own style as an ardent defender of the New German School, at one time becoming one of the world's most widely sung songwriters. The author Thomas Mann (1875-1955) also commented in his later years that he was once again attracted to his music, and the songs collected here are in fact a series of great melodies filled with the taste of the extremely exotic late Romantic period.The rich sound of the 1875 Steinway, which was made at the same time as the work, enhances the beauty of the work, as well as the famous singing of Van Mechelen, who has attracted wide attention in the antique music scene. Lassen was also aware of the importance of ancient instruments as early as the 19th century, and wrote two works with viola d'amore accompaniment, both of which are included on this album.
