This is rare! Even though there are many wind instrument recordings using authentic old instruments that specialize in 15th century wind ensembles while savoring the refinement of "court music" to the utmost limit, it is rare to find an album that specializes in such old repertoire and successfully combines musicological research with musicality. The three-piece ensemble consists of two players of the shawm, a double reed instrument that has existed since the Middle Ages and is even older than the oboe and its predecessor, the bombarde, and a master of old brass who uses the trombone and its early form, the sackbut, as well as the slide trumpet, which has been around since ancient times. This program explores the true nature of wind ensembles in the court music of the early Renaissance, before the urban wind ensembles of the Alta Capella took shape. The program focuses on works written by Dufay, a great master of the early Netherlandish school, at the court of Burgundy and in various places in Italy, and shows how elaborate three-voice polyphony could be performed without singing on the instruments of the time. The commentary is by the performer, Hannah Geisel (English, French, German). This is a piece that will immerse you in the otherworldly 15th century sound with a mysterious floating sensation.
