Shiranosian and Alarcón Passionately Unravel the Origins of the Great Bach’s Violin Artistry This album explores the works Bach composed leading up to one of the greatest masterpieces of violin music, the *Unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas*, as well as the composers who likely had a profound influence on him. From Farina, who brought the art of the violin from Italy to Germany, to the masters Muffat and Westhoff, who later shaped the German and Austrian musical scenes; from two of Bach’s sonatas and a fugue from his early years; to Walter’s passacaglia—a piece with which Shiranosian has been familiar since his days studying under Reinhard Gebel in Salzburg, as well as movements from a sonata once attributed to Bach but now believed to be the work of Pizendel, who served for many years as concertmaster of the contemporary Dresden court orchestra. Perhaps due to the diverse backgrounds of Shiranosian—who is of Armenian-French descent—along with Aralcon from Argentina and Máté from Hungary, it is a delight to hear these three musicians, so perfectly in sync, deliver such passionate performances across every piece. In “The Triumph of the Christians”—a work in which A.A. Schmelzer, son of the master Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, reworked a composition by Biber—the trio surprises the listener by playing with paper wedged between the cello strings in certain sections, adding sound effects that evoke a 17th-century battlefield.
