Siblet, the daughter of a farmer in the Paris suburbs, goes to the Paris market every morning to sell vegetables. She plans to get married when she turns 21, and while looking for a husband, she ended up getting engaged to eight men. However, she can’t bring herself to feel true love for any of them. One day, when she has her palm read by a fortune-teller at the market, she receives only a cryptic answer: “You’ll find happiness when you’re handed a strange letter.” To make matters worse, she fails to sell the vegetables she brought and is feeling dejected when the market manager, Duparc, arrives with Antonin, a wealthy viscount who had just been dumped the night before by the high-class courtesan Zenobie. The two of them buy the vegetables from Sibylle, but... How will Siblette find a wonderful lover? The comic opera *Siblette* by Reynaldo Hahn—a close friend of the writer Proust and also known as a composer of art songs—premiered on April 7, 1923, at the Théâtre de la Variété in Paris to great acclaim. Set against the backdrop of Parisian markets, rural villages on the outskirts of the city, theaters, and high society, this story—in which Sibylle, a young vegetable seller at the market, finds happiness guided by three prophecies from a fortune-teller—is depicted with a lighthearted touch. In this production, the nostalgic sentiment for the Belle Époque era that permeates the work is richly evoked through the comical and sophisticated direction of Michel Foix, who is also active as a comic actor. The cast’s lighthearted vocal performances—particularly the beautiful singing of Julie Fuchs in the title role—are perfectly suited to their characters. The supple and lively performance by the ensemble Accentus, conducted by Christophe Grablon, further enhances the work.
