A 40th anniversary release from the Chamber Orchestra of Europe: landmark live performances with Harnoncourt, all appearing on CD for the first time. The Chamber Orchestra of Europe celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2021. Over those four decades it has worked with the very finest conductors and soloists, beginning with Claudio Abbado, who was closely involved in its founding – and now some of its most memorable performances with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, with whom it enjoyed a uniquely close bond, come to light. Although a modern-instrument ensemble, the COE combines a compact line-up with a clear, transparent sound and a flexible, adventurous musicianship, and it consistently met Harnoncourt's exacting demands; he in turn gave it his particular trust and affection. Every performance here is a CD premiere. The playing is taut in tempo and strongly accented, with a dramatic edge and all the momentum and immediacy of live performance. Haydn in particular shows Harnoncourt at his most characteristic, bringing the composer's carefully planted details into sharp relief. His Beethoven Fifth is quicker in every movement than his Teldec recording of sixteen years earlier, with a corresponding gain in tension and intensity. "There is no orchestra (apart from the Concentus) with which I am bound by stronger affection than the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. The COE is like a band of intrepid explorers. The 24-page booklet (English, German and French) contains reminiscences from seventeen members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. (The Japanese domestic edition includes a complete translation.)
