Brahms performed by Jonathan Fournel, winner of the 2021 Queen Elisabeth Competition The 2021 Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition’s piano division caused quite a stir in Japan thanks to the prize-winning performances of Keigo Mutokawa and Tomoki Sakata. Now, ALPHA is releasing a recording of Brahms performed by Jonathan Fournel, who not only won the competition but also received the Queen Mathilde Prize and the Audience Prize. Born in Sarrebourg, France, in 1993, his admiration for Brahms has grown steadily over the past few years. He has a particular affection for the astonishing techniques that reveal the depth and grandeur of the piano’s tone in these two pieces, making it a natural choice to feature them on his debut album. This aligns perfectly with his dynamic style of performance, offering a global and broad-ranging expression unique to today’s young generation—one that transcends national characteristics and historical periods. It was also Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 that earned him first place in the final round of the Elisabeth Competition. He also performed the Handel Variations at that competition, and while a live recording of that performance has been released (QEC2021), the recording included here is from a studio session conducted prior to the competition.
