Description:

Long-awaited first CD release from authorized sources! 1981 Verdi: Requiem by Muti with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Verdi's Requiem concert held in October 1981 at the Herkulessaal, Munich. The best singers of the time, Jesse Norman, Agnes Baltza, Jose Carreras, and Evgeny Nesterenko were the soloists, and Riccardo Muti conducted the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The performance is now being released on BR-KLASSIK 40 years later. The Verdi Requiem was rarely performed in Munich at the time, but the 40-year old Muti's performance had a powerful impact on the audience, and the story of the performance has been told for a long time. Critics have commented that "there has never been such a masterful performance on the north side of the Alps," "the style of the performance was worthy of Verdi; it was both tremblingly terrible and sweet, and I felt as if I were glimpsing a world beyond this world," "the brass sounded as if it came from the other world," and "I had never seen, heard or experienced anything like it in my life up to that point. The sound of the brass seemed to echo from the other side of the world," and "It was something special that I had never seen, heard, or experienced in my life.Muti's conducting, which never lets the music slacken even for a moment due to its strong driving force, the four soloists' impassioned singing, and the superb sound of the orchestra and chorus, all of which were highly praised at the time, are well deserved.
