Description:

A complete collection of the numbered symphonies by Malcolm Arnold (1921–2006), one of the leading British composers of the 20th century, has been released. Born in Northampton—the same hometown as Orwin and Rabl—Arnold served as principal trumpeter of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He excelled at creating a brilliant orchestral sound through the effective use of brass and percussion, and possessed a broad perspective that allowed him to incorporate folk songs from across Britain, as well as jazz, Latin, and other forms of pop music into his works. These elements are prominent in many of his symphonies; combined with tonal clarity, catchy melodies, and resonant orchestration, they create numerous dramatic and carefree moments that would fit perfectly into a scene from an action or suspense film. However, during the period from 1949 (Symphony No. 1) to 1986 (Symphony No. 9), it seems there were times when he was underestimated as a symphonic composer precisely because of this “accessible and enjoyable” style. The fact that he also composed light music and film scores—and that the music for *The Bridge on the River Kwai* won an Academy Award—may have further fueled this tendency. Yet, looking back at his music today, it seems to convey the vitality of postwar Britain, which had become a center of global musical culture. Among them, only the enigmatic Ninth Symphony—written after his battle with illness—resonates poignantly, like Arnold’s personal monologue. Charles Groves played a major role in the premieres and promotion of Arnold’s symphonies. Andrew Penny, who conducts this complete set of numbered symphonies, was a conductor mentored by Groves, and the recording sessions took place in Arnold’s presence. The disc featuring Symphony No. 9 includes a conversation between Arnold and Penny (in English). The Japanese edition comes with a comprehensive liner note by Noriyuki Komuro, who possesses extensive knowledge of classical music, contemporary music, jazz, and film scores. Naxos Japan
