At the age of 11, Prokofiev received private composition lessons from Raingorit Grier. However, it was Grier’s violin playing that truly captivated the young Prokofiev. More than a decade later, in 1916, he composed his Violin Concerto No. 1. It is a work characterized by lyrical melodies and a whimsical playfulness, with the wild scherzo of the second movement leaving a particularly strong impression. Composed in 1935, the Violin Concerto No. 2 is a beautiful piece that, while gentle, occasionally reveals glimpses of understated passion. The third movement features Spanish-inspired motifs, with castanets playing a prominent role. The Sonata for Solo Violin was written “for talented children to play in unison.” Of course, it can also be performed solo. From Sarasate and Ysaÿe to Reim, Tianwa Yang possesses exceptional technique and a wide-ranging repertoire. In this Prokofiev piece, she has further deepened her musicality and masterfully utilized her beautiful tone—from the softest to the loudest—to fully bring out the work’s charm. The Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jun Merkur, complements her with a flawless performance. [Tianwa Yang] Born in Beijing, she began studying the violin at age 4 and quickly demonstrated her talent. At age 10, she began studying under Lin Yaojie at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. At age 13, she recorded Paganini’s 24 Caprices. In 2003, she received a scholarship to study in Germany and subsequently made Germany her home base. She has performed with orchestras across Europe—including the United Kingdom, Germany, and France—as well as in North America, Oceania, and Asia. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has appeared at the Lucerne Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Ravinia Festival, Wigmore Hall, Salle Pleyel, and Lincoln Center, among others. He has made numerous recordings for the Naxos label, and in 2014, he won the German Record Critics’ Award for his recordings of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto and Sarasate’s Violin Works. In 2015, he was named Instrumentalist of the Year at the ECHO Classic Awards for his recording of Ysaÿe’s Sonatas for Solo Violin.
