This is the very origin of French orchestral music! Featuring an elite early music ensemble conducted by Dumestre, Even before Bach and Handel rose to prominence, France boasted immense influence as a major force in European music. A precious collection of works by de Lalande—who can be considered the origin of French orchestral art—is now available in a recording featuring France’s leading virtuosos, performed at the Palace of Versailles, the very place where these works were composed! Louis XIV, the ruler of the palace, overwhelmed diplomatic guests with sophisticated works of art and furnishings, and impressed upon them the prestige of French culture by having the royal court’s unique music performed throughout the palace; he was also famous for making his own dinners public, accompanied by music. That music was composed by the young genius de Lallande, who served as Director of Court Music following the death of Lully, and has been preserved for the present day through scores compiled after the King’s death (“symphonie” would come to mean “symphony” from the 18th century onward, but at this time it simply meant “ensemble piece”). These works are unique even within the musical repertoire of Louis XIV’s court, and given that recordings of them are few and far between, this album is sure to attract attention as a long-awaited, authentic recording from the French early music scene. After all, the conductor is Vincent Dumestru, who has built a reputation conducting de Lalande’s large-scale choral works and Lully’s operas! The all-orchestral lineup—a rarity for Le Poème Harmonique—is relatively large, featuring a succession of key performers led by Jeremy Papasergio, a virtuoso on the Baroque bassoon who has also made a name for himself in recordings such as Nique’s *Music on the Water*. The ensemble, which also incorporates three types of French violas, consists of 24 strings, 6 winds, and one each of percussion and keyboard instruments, including two theorbo players. Experts have worked on completing the surviving scores, and the liner notes are comprehensive. This is a must-have release that allows listeners to savor the authentic sound of these masterpieces—works that whetted the king’s appetite and enchanted art lovers—straight from the source.
