Ten years after the completion of the six-title “Concertos for Various Instruments” series, the ensemble now presents a new approach to Bach’s music: “Private Music Books.” Even in the 18th century, when the music publishing industry was beginning to flourish, the custom of hand-copying sheet music remained strong. It is believed that in settings where music was enjoyed among private circles of friends, people would transcribe scores—often arranging them for ensembles they could actually perform—and this program’s selection of pieces is precisely in line with the customs of that era. In addition to numerous fascinating tracks—including instrumental ensemble pieces and arias from church cantatas adapted for chamber music—this album features works written by Bach’s second son during the period when he began working at the court of Frederick the Great, as well as *The Musical Offering*, written for the Great King—this album allows listeners to relive the everyday life of the 18th century that resonated throughout the world surrounding Bach in his later years.
