From chamber-like ensembles to majestic forte passages: Paavo’s heartfelt performance of “Pathétique” The Tchaikovsky cycle featuring the Tonhalle Orchestra and its new music director, Paavo Järvi, had been scheduled for the 2019–20 season. Although the schedule had to be revised due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to the enthusiasm of the artists and staff, the series was completed in January 2021—about a year behind schedule—as a live performance without an audience, and the recordings made during these performances will be released as a complete symphony collection. Following the previously released Symphony No. 5, No. 4 (and No. 2), it has been decided to release Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique,” as a standalone release to complete the three great late symphonies. For Paavo Järvi, this “Pathétique” marks his first re-recording since the 2007 album with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (Telarc); however, it was actually performed and recorded during the very early stages of the cycle, alongside Symphony No. 4. Nevertheless, one can already hear the seamless blend of each musician’s spontaneous expression and the tight ensemble cohesion—a testament to the excellent chemistry between this newly formed partnership—as well as the rich, undulating depth of the entire performance. While the interplay between the woodwinds lends a chamber-music-like quality, the forte passages that lift the orchestra to new heights are equally majestic. To use a visual analogy, this performance is like a high-resolution image with deep depth of field; even within the relatively fast tempo, it fully brings out the work’s charm. “Romeo and Juliet” is included toward the end of the cycle.
