Saint-Saëns Performed by Astrig Shiranosian and Nabil Shehata Saint-Saëns performed by the South Westphalia Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Nabil Shehata—a double bassist who formerly served as principal double bassist of the Berlin Philharmonic—who has been the orchestra’s principal conductor since 2006. The soloist in the Cello Concerto is Astrig Shiranoshian, a cellist who has gained popularity in Japan through her appearances at *La Folle Journée*; with her lustrous tone and rich, singing expression that permeates every note, she brings out the full charm of this work, which evokes the Orientalist sensibilities characteristic of Saint-Saëns in his middle age. The following Symphony No. 1, composed when the composer was just 18, is characterized by skillful orchestration that reveals his precocious talent and a refreshing musical concept brimming with youthful energy; Shehata performed it with both freshness and powerful expression. The passionate climax of the “Bacchanale,” which closes the album, is also truly magnificent. This is an album well worth listening to. The Japanese edition includes a Japanese liner note.
