Saint-Saëns by Astrig Syranosyan and Nabil ShehataThis Saint-Saëns concerto is performed by the Philharmonic Orchestra of South Westphalia, whose principal conductor since 2006 is Nabil Shehata, a double bass player who also served as principal of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The cello soloist in the cello concerto is Astrig Silanosyan, a popular cellist in Japan since his visit to Japan for La Folle Journée, who brings out the best of the charm of this work with his lustrous tone and rich singing spirit that permeates every part of the work, which also evokes the oriental taste typical of Saint-Saens in his prime. The following Symphony No. 1, written by the composer when he was 18 years old, is characterized by its skillful orchestration and youthful, exhilarating tone, which Shehata sang with freshness and power. The passionate climax of the "Bacchanal," which closes the album, is also truly magnificent. This is an album well worth listening to. Naxos Japan
