Patricia Kopachinskaya, the brilliant violinist from Moldova who is currently one of the most unmissable artists on the scene, never fails to astonish music fans around the world with her extraordinary projects every time she releases an album. Sol Gabetta, a popular cellist from Argentina, has released numerous albums, including concertos, solo works, and various concept albums. Though their artistic styles may seem vastly different at first glance, the two have been close friends since meeting in 2002 and have performed together frequently. They previously collaborated on Kopatchinskaja’s album *Illuminated Pleasure* (ALPHA580/NYCX-10180), they performed together in Francisco Koy’s Double Concerto; now, at long last, their duo album has been released. Centered on works by Ravel and Kodály, the album features a diverse selection of pieces, including duets by composers ranging from Xenakis, Ligeti, Wittmann, and Marković, as well as works by C.P.E. Bach and J.S. Bach in which the right and left hands of keyboard pieces are arranged as a duet. Their performance is lively and exceeds expectations, delighting listeners from the opening Leclerc piece with a highly stylized interpretation that significantly reimagines the original. Both “SOL” and “PAT” in the title are taken from the artists’ names; “SOL” means “sun” in Gabetta’s native language (Spanish), while “PAT” means “bed” or “bag” in Kopachinskaya’s native language (Romanian).
