An album featuring Witman—a leading contemporary composer, clarinetist, and conductor—and his flagship ensemble, the Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO). The opening track, “Con Brio,” is a work that Witman composed after being commissioned to create a new piece to accompany Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and No. 8 during Mariss Jansons’ Beethoven cycle with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra; he freely developed the theme from Symphony No. 7 to create this piece (The live recording from Suntory Hall featuring Jansons and the BR Symphony Orchestra has already been released by BR-KLASSIK, catalog number 900137). This marks the long-awaited first recording by the composer himself. Richard Strauss’s Double Concerto, composed in his later years, is a small yet compelling work that incorporates dramatic elements into a classical structure reminiscent of Baroque concertos. In addition to Wittmann on clarinet, it features the virtuosic playing of Diego Kenna—who has gained a large following in Japan through performances such as his tour with Heinz Holliger—is a delight to hear. In the main program featuring Beethoven, the rhythm—described as the “sanctification of dance”—is not only dynamic but also results in a truly fresh-sounding and highly captivating performance.
