Alarcon’s *Orfeo*: Bursting with Latin Passion! While the combination of music and drama has a long history, Monteverdi’s *Orfeo* is sometimes called “the first large-scale opera in history” because it most closely resembles the modern form of opera. Among the many acclaimed recordings of this work, a noteworthy new recording has now been released. Leonardo García, an Argentine-born conductor who has been active in Europe since 1997 and has made remarkable strides in recent years, Alarcón, who has been active in Europe since 1997 and has seen a remarkable rise to prominence in recent years, and his ensemble, Capella Mediterranea, have created a magnificent performance that is firmly rooted in scholarly research while fully showcasing their signature Latin musicality. Orfeo is sung by Valerio Contaldo, a tenor currently in high demand for Baroque opera recordings and performances; Eurydice is portrayed by Mariana Flores, renowned for her expressive renditions ranging from opera to Baroque art songs; and the role of the female messenger is taken by Giuseppina Bridelli, who demonstrated astonishing expressiveness on the album (ARCANAA461/NYCX-10055), where she demonstrated astonishing expressiveness; and the Messenger, played by Giuseppina Bridelli—the poignant singing of this impeccable cast of vocalists is a highlight of the album. The ensemble features no fewer than ten musicians, including the renowned continuo specialist Keith Garth, and conveys a tremendous sense of intensity right from the opening Toccata.
