The title, “City of the Big Shoulders,” refers to the city of Chicago. This nickname became widely known after Carl Sandburg, an American poet best known for his biography of Abraham Lincoln, referred to Chicago as the “City of the Big Shoulders” (a city of broad-shouldered men, or a city of workers) in his 1916 collection *Poems of Chicago*. This album features piano trios by two Chicago-born composers active in the 20th century. You can enjoy these cheerful works born from the hustle and bustle of the city. Ernst Bacon, who began composing in his twenties, shunned avant-garde music and continued to write accessible works that incorporated folk songs, jazz, and other elements of his country’s music. His Trio No. 2, recorded here for the first time worldwide, consists of seven movements featuring pleasant, folk-inspired melodies that are easy on the ear. Leo Sawaby was a composer who established his reputation as the organist and choir director at St. James Church in Chicago. Unlike the serenity of the religious works he was known for, this trio is a lively piece with an energetic atmosphere. The Lincoln Trio, who perform here, are accomplished musicians who have been nominated for two Grammy Awards. Once again, they deliver a performance marked by tight ensemble playing. Naxos Japan
