Description:
A collection of works by modern Icelandic composers, performed by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, which has a 70-year history. This third installment, which concludes the project, features works by five composers, including a violin concerto by conductor Bjarnaason himself. After serving as the orchestra’s Artist-in-Residence from 2015 to 2018, Daniel Bjarnason was appointed Principal Guest Conductor in 2019, and and has further deepened his relationship with the orchestra by assuming the role of Artist in Association in August 2021. This violin concerto premiered at the Hollywood Bowl in 2017 and has since been highly acclaimed as an outstanding work. “Lendh” by the young female composer Véronique Vaca is a notable work that was nominated for the 2020 Icelandic Music Awards. Tomason’s “In the Seventh Heaven” was commissioned to commemorate the opening of the Harpa Concert Hall. The harp’s timbre is used to great effect. Jónsdóttir’s “Flutter” was composed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Olivier Messiaen’s birth. The sounds of birds, crickets, and grasshoppers are imitated by the instruments. Although Johansson was one of the first composers in Iceland to write twelve-tone music, this “Adagio” features beautiful, tonal melodies. Naxos Japan
