A Major Achievement! Unveiling the Full Scope of a Little-Known Talent from the Late Netherlandish School About 10 years younger than Lassus and Le Jeune, and about 10 years older than G. Gabrieli and Marenzio. Born in the late Renaissance era in what is now southwestern Belgium, in a region where the French-speaking and Dutch-speaking areas bordered each other. While Péfernaut’s (pronounced “Puvérnauge” in French) works have been sporadically included on many early music albums, making him by no means a complete unknown, this is likely the first time an entire album has been dedicated almost exclusively to this composer. Active primarily in Bruges and Antwerp—and particularly involved in the thriving music publishing scene in Antwerp—many of his works were printed and circulated, leaving behind a substantial body of chansons (secular songs) with French lyrics and sacred works with Latin lyrics. Spanning both genres, the musical world presented by these four singers in a cappella performances offers a rich blend that straddles the line between the pinnacle of Renaissance polyphony and the undulating music leading into the Baroque era. The natural sound engineering characteristic of the RAMEE label also stands out, making this an album that allows listeners to fully appreciate his diverse musical language. Naxos Japan
