Description:
A dance video from the much-talked-about production of *The Taming of the Shrew*, featuring a Shakespeare-Shostakovich-Mayo collaboration, is now available! The wealthy Baptista is the father of two daughters, Katharina and Bianca. Numerous suitors come to his home, but their eyes are set on the demure and graceful younger sister, Bianca. However, according to the customs of the time, the eldest daughter, Katharina, must marry first. But Catherine is far too headstrong—will she ever find a suitable match? Then along comes Petruchio, a boorish man after her dowry. He boldly proposes to Catherine, but… Jean-Christophe Maillot, who continues to present one hit production after another, attempts to reinterpret classical ballet from a new perspective through a refined aesthetic sensibility, combined with choreography for new contemporary dance works. This production of *The Taming of the Shrew* was choreographed for the Bolshoi Ballet in 2013. Based on Shakespeare’s play and incorporating music from Shostakovich’s various film scores—including *Hamlet*, *A Woman Alone*, and *The Horse Thief*—this work has been crafted into an outstanding comedy ballet. At the 2014 “Golden Mask Awards,” and was met with great acclaim, winning three awards: “Best Choreography,” “Best Female Dancer,” and “Best Male Dancer.” This performance was recorded in 2020 by the Monte Carlo Ballet, under the artistic direction of Mayol. The role of Katharina is danced by Ekaterina Petina of Russia, and Petruchio by Matěj Urban of the Czech Republic. Centered around these two dancers, the Monte Carlo Ballet’s graceful and dynamic performance captivates the audience. [Jean-Christophe Maillot] A ballet dancer and choreographer from Tours, France.
