Description:

Sangarid is the daughter of Sangar, the river god, and the fiancée of Celenus, son of Neptune and King of Phrygia. She secretly harbors feelings for her relative, the handsome young man Attis, and Attis, too, is in love with Sangarid. Meanwhile, Cybele, the goddess of the earth who loves Attis, descends and confesses her love to him. Sangaride and Attis reaffirm their love for one another while tormented by their sense of betrayal toward their respective fiancés and the goddess. However, as a punishment from the enraged goddess Cybele, Sangaride is killed by Atis’s own hand. Overcome with remorse, Atis… *Atis*, a lyrical tragedy and Lully’s fourth opera. Premiered in 1676 at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye for Louis XIV, this opera was highly acclaimed from the outset thanks to Philippe Quinault’s meticulous libretto and Lully’s elegant music; however, it eventually faded into obscurity and went unperformed for a long time. Attention was drawn to this work once again in 1987, marking the 300th anniversary of Lully’s death. William Christie—who delivers a magnificent performance as conductor in this video—revived the production, and its historic success sparked a wave of performances across the globe. This video is a recording of a 2011 performance at the Opéra-Comique in Paris; rather than seeking novelty or eccentricity, the production captivates the audience with its lavish and authentic staging, faithfully recreating the style, costumes, and sets of the original premiere. Featuring prominent early music singers such as Emmanuel de Negri, Bernard Richter, and Stéphanie Destrac, Christy brings the entire production together with his fluid and dynamic conducting. This release is a reissue of the disc originally released by FRAMusica in 2011, with the addition of Japanese subtitles. The bonus video material included with the original release is not included here. Naxos Japan
